"I use portraiture and pattern to explore beauty, womanhood, motherhood, and spirituality. Most recently I have been incorporating plant and flower motifs in my imagery to represent personal growth, self-care and leisure as they relate to women in my mediate community and the broader diaspora.
In Awaiting Spring, the figure sits with arms resting on her legs, hands loosely clasped and her gaze directed toward the viewer. The pattern on the sitter’s pants is created by the Bese Saka, an Adinkrya symbol which symbolizes affluence, power and abundance. The implied wall behind the sitter is adorned with a pattern created from the Mate Masie which symbolizes wisdom and knowledge. I selected these symbols to accompany the figure because of their meanings, and the aesthetic and design qualities their patterns create. The color palette of pastel green and blue green serves the work by evoking the feeling of springtime.
Awaiting Spring is a tribute to my favorite season of the year and anticipation of new things to come."
